Replacing Encoder of the FT-757GX                      Back to main PROJECTS page

This is what the people at YEASU USA said about it

This is what you call a CHALLENGE !

On the left the original Encoder

On the right the replacement Encoder ...... WHAT ?

Yep this is what they call the replacement

I allready thought so ..... everything went to smooth. But I’m not complaining

I was the one that loved the challenge .......  sh*****

.............................................. anybody some good ideas ?

How did I get the old encoder out .......... here is the story

In the first place the knob wouldn’t come of as it should have, probably because the shaft was wobly. And as I didn’t know anything about the construction because I never saw a exploded view ...... I did an old trick;

Just make a hole in de side of the nob underneath the rubber band and try and get a smal screwdriver in between the end of the shaft and the knob ...... it worked ........ again. Reassambling the VFO-knob is no problem.

But this is just the start to get annywhere close to the encoder .......

Taking the knobs and nuts away >

< Getting naked

There he is ........ should be easy ! ?

Doing it as described by the people of YEASU is impossible because of the wires being to short

So this is how I had to do it

Told you so ....... easy .......

Some 20 to 25 years ago somebody assambled this machine .......

disassambling wasn’t so hard ...................

... assambling again shouldn’t be so hard

................................ I hope

............................. TO BE CONTINUED

Best advise I got up till now

Be patient and work carefully                   Thanks Tim

More good advise ....... please

After I mailed Tim (YEASU Vertex) the link to my site he reacted almost immediatelly

this is what he wrote:

Patrick:

I went to your web site and I really want  to ease your pain.  Give me your mailing address and I will send you a used encoder at no charge that I rescued it from one of our Junker FT-757.  Hopefully it will work for you and lighten your challenge.

I’m shure I choose the right brand, thanks Tim

Now I can test my new/occasion AntennaTuner  YEASU FC-757AT

works fine automatically and manual !

VFO knob just pulls off of the encoder, but there is no adjustment

inside.  You can test to see if the wobble is the encoder shaft itself.

It is then the solution is to replace the VFO encoder.

However, that is not an easy thing to do. Unless you want a challenging

ham project, I would advise leaving it alone.

PA11111 >  As you guessed ................ I didn’t listen to this good advise

How to do ?

Ok, here goes.  Remove the front and bottom cover.  Then remove the

retaining screws on the front panel and tilt the front forward.  Now you will see the access to the encoder.  Carefully remove the encoder, and that's the challenge.

november 6 2008

Today I received the new/used encoder from Tim at YEASU USA, the shaft on this one wasn’t wobly at all.

One hour later  --------------->

And yes it works still fine and the VFO-knob runs

very smooth now !
